In this post, we are featuring 10 useful Android tips and tricks that may improve your experience while using your Android device. Do note that the steps may vary a little from one Android phone to another due to the differences in the build and the OS version, but if you play around with it, the next step isn’t too far off.

1. Disable App Notifications

Bugged by annoying app notifications that just keep coming? If you don’t know already, these app notifications also drain your phone’s battery. If you want to turn them off, and you are on Jelly Bean 4.1 and above, here’s how:

On any of your unwanted notifications in your notification bar, long press on the notification for a message box to appear.

Tap on App Info > Untick Show Notifications > OK.

2. Disable Mobile Data

Whenever you don’t need to stay connected, disabling the Mobile Data can help keep your smartphone battery from draining too quickly. Turning off mobile data is as easy as:

  1. Going to Settings > Data Usage.
  2. Disable Mobile data by toggling the setting from ON to OFF.

3. Set Mobile Data Limit

Want to keep track of how far your usage is from your monthly mobile data limit? If you have ICS and above, there is a feature which lets you keep track of how much of the quota you have left.

  1. Head over to Settings > Data Usage.
  2. Set your data limit by dragging the orange line to reflect your monthly quota.
  3. Set your data usage cycle based on when your "month" starts and ends, and you’re done.

You will be alerted once you hit the limit you have set. Note that the tracked data usage of your phone may vary slightly than your carrier’s tracking.

4. Add Multiple Google Accounts

You need a Google account to use an Android phone but did you know you can choose to run more than one Google account on your Android device. This is convenient if you use more than one account for several of your Google services. To add multiple Google accounts:

  1. Go to Settings > Add account.
  2. Select Google and setup your New or Existing Google account.
  3. Once added, choose what you want to sync with the account.

Repeat all the steps above if you want to add more accounts.

  1. Open Play Store and head over to Settings.
  2. Tap on Auto-update apps.
  3. Choose Do not auto-update apps.

If you want to enable the auto updates, follow the same path and choose Auto-update apps at any time or via Wi-Fi (available for certain Android devices only).

To update your apps manually, just open Play Store, and on the main page swipe in from the left and tap on My apps. You can tap on apps with pending updates and update them manually, or if you like to update them all at once, just tap on Update All.

Once you have a lot of apps installed, your homescreen might be filled with app shortcuts. Unlike the app drawer, the apps on your home screen are not arranged alphabetically. So, you might want to create some folders for your homescreen shortcuts.

  1. Assuming you have more than a handful of shortcuts already on your homescreen, long press on any of the shortcuts and drag it onto another shortcut.
  2. A circle should now appear around the apps, indicating that a folder has been created.

8 smartphone hacks for the non-tech savvy

A recent Chinese government report shows that 90% of Chinese access the internet via mobile devices, which means they probably own a smartphone. This is also a worldwide trend, with many netizens in emerging markets skipping PCs to access information.

Many consumers are not sure how to quickly troubleshoot their devices.

Steve Castro, a veteran graphic and web designer based in Long Island, NY, shared with AllChinaTech a few hacks on security and saving data, which can turn you into a savvier consumer.

1. Add contact info to your smartphone’s lock screen image.
This could be a long shot, but in case a good samaritan wants to return your lost phone, the person can easily find a way to contact you via your lockscreen image. Castro suggests either taking a picture after scribbling your contact details on a piece of paper or taking a screenshot after typing the information in your preferred note-taking app.

2. Find out which apps are data hogs on your device.
Most consumers sign up for a fixed monthly data package, with an option to pay their wireless carriers in certain countries for more data if their usage exceeds the monthly limit. If you constantly hit your data limit and unsure why, Castro says Apple devices running iOS 8 and above provide a breakdown of how much data the apps have used in Settings. See this Yahoo story for detailed instructions. For Android users, Castro recommends using third-party apps such as Onavo Count and My Data Manager to monitor the data usage on your devices.

3. Live GPS is a huge data hog.
To beat the game and save data consumption, Castro has two must-dos before you hit the road. The first is to screenshot your travel directions and refer to them rather than relying on live turn-by-turn instructions. Secondly, many maps apps including Google Maps allow users to download maps of the city you are searching for. Castro says you can always save the maps ahead of time from a wifi zone, and it’s a good practice to do so, in case your travel destination has limited cell reception. Here are instructions on how to download Google Maps.

4. Activate airplane mode when you are stuck with no signal.
Yes, you can use airplane mode when you’re not flying around the world in a metal tube. Castro recommends turning on airplane mode for a minute or so to let your device reconnect to the nearest cell tower, instead of clinging on to the weaker one.

5. Charging your phone with airplane mode on takes less time, but only a tiny bit.
Well, this one is not earth-shattering because Castro says it only boosts the charging rate 2-5%. Also you will temporarily be unable to receive calls, texts, browse the web or refresh apps that require data while airplane mode is on, since your phone is dedicated to being charged up. Therefore my advice is to deploy this tactic when you need to quickly add juice and when you’re not worried about missing out.

6. Try dialing 112 in emergency situations.
When you are traveling to a new country and unfamiliar with the local emergency hotline, try calling 112. It’s not universal for all phones or available in all countries, since this is mostly a European emergency number which directs you to a local emergency operator for assistance. AllChinaTech tested it in Beijing and it went to a voice message in Mandarin with instructions to call various service departments. Here is a list of countries that 112 will work for. Castro says in most instances, dialing 112 will allow your phone to use any available service, even if it’s not from your wireless service provider or the phone is locked.

7. Spend money on paid apps.
Yes, we like free apps. Like most free things in life, they always come with a price. Castro recommends paying for premium version of apps that won’t show you ads. He says free apps constantly use your data to deliver you different commercials! Besides saving your data consumption that way, Castro says it can also save some battery power on your device.

8. Your Android phone is also a hard drive.
Most Android users forget the fact that you can switch on “disk drive” mode when connecting the device to a computer. Here are how-to instructions. Castro reminds users to do this when you need to save a large presentation or video file. iOS users, don’t worry, you can also try saving files from your Mac to your iPhone via third-party apps. The instructions for this USB & Wi-Fi Flash Drive app say you can reverse the saving process, too.

No time to clean your kitchen? No problem!

No time to clean your kitchen? No problem!
We all lead busy lives, so we don’t always have time to clean and tidy our kitchens. If only it could be done in just a couple of minutes; wouldn’t that be perfect? Well, it can be done! Follow these tips if you don’t have a lot of time on a daily basis, but do want a clean kitchen!

These tricks will help you to keep your kitchen nice and tidy.

10. Install adhesive hooks
Adhesive hooks are your best friends: you can stick them wherever you want and you don’t need to drill into a wall for it. Stick a few hooks onto a kitchen cabinet or on the wall. These hooks are ideal for hanging kitchen equipment, oven mitts or towels. Your kitchen will immediately look tidier.

9. Clear out your fridge
Take a few minutes to clean up your fridge. Throw out everything that’s passed its expiration date or that has been open for a long time. Quickly wipe your fridge with a cloth. It’ll look nice and neat again.

8. Clean up your drawer
Everyone has one of these: a gadget drawer that’s just one big mess of small gadgets, things you needed to put away quickly and things you won’t ever need again in your life. Take a moment to tidy it and throw away everything you won’t use again. Want to make it even tidier? Use small containers within the drawer to store things in and make sure it stays tidy.

7. Set up a meal plan
Think of what you want to eat this week and buy the ingredients all in one go. That way, you know exactly what you’re doing when you get into the kitchen to cook. We can guarantee you this will mean less of a mess when you’re done.

6. Plastic bags
It’s a staple eyesore in a lot of households: what seems like about a hundred plastic bags in the kitchen. You save them because you figure you can use them again and it isn’t very eco-friendly to throw them out right away, and before you know it you’ve got a ton of them. Make sure you have a couple of plastic bags left to use, but throw out the rest of them. Promise yourself you will always take a plastic bag with you and never buy a new one again!

5. Clear out your appliances
Many kitchens have a couple of appliances that are either used very often or hardly ever. Give away all of the appliances you never use or find a good place to store them, out of sight.

4. Tupperware
You’ve got about 30 plastic containers to store leftovers in, but you only ever use the same five or so. Sound familiar? They’re an eyesore every time you open the kitchen cabinet and they take up so much space! Fix this problem by simply throwing out the containers you no longer use. Or maybe someone else would like to take them off your hands.

3. Check your spice rack
Spices don’t keep forever: at some point, they expire. So, check what spices you have in your kitchen cupboard or spice rack and throw out the spices that have expired. Tidy the rack while you’re at it; actually add that salt to your salt shaker instead of leaving it in the bag.

2. Throw out food
It’s not just your fridge and spice rack that could do with a bit of tidying: the pantry needs a good clear out every now and then as well. Check all of the pots and cans for their expiration date and throw out what’s passed said date. The same goes for small amounts of pasta or rice that are left over and you won’t be eating anymore anyway.

1. The final touch
Take a few minutes to tidy your counters. Clear away all of the small things on there, like elastic bands, caps and coupons. Clear them away properly (don’t just throw them in a drawer) and you’ll see your kitchen looks a lot tidier already. Remember to only leave those things on the counter that you actually use on a regular basis.

This is the best way to get rid of skin tags!

This is the best way to get rid of skin tags!

Loads of people have these: small skin tags (or big ones in some cases). Skin tags are protruding bits of skin that can appear anywhere on your body: your neck, legs, arms, etc. They’re completely benign, but they don’t look too pretty, which is why a lot people want to get rid of them. Many people visit their doctors to let them remove it, while others try expensive creams or lotions. Both solutions can be expensive and sometimes a bit painful.

It doesn’t have to be either of those things, though.

Origin
The origin of skin tags isn’t completely clear, but some people assume that it has something to do with a weakened immune system. We don’t know if this is actually true, but that doesn’t stop us from wanting to know what’s the best to get rid of these ugly tags. Luckily, we’ve found a very easy way to treat them. It’s effective, natural, and completely painless. As if that wasn’t enough, it also isn’t expensive at all. In fact, you might already own the solution!

Go to the next page to read all about how to get rid of these skin tags!

Simple product
There’s no need for nitrogen to freeze off these tags. All you need is this very simple product: apple cider vinegar! This is a product that is getting more and more popular, since it’s very effective for lots of different purposes, like getting rid of skin tags. The apple cider vinegar dries out the skin tag which eventually makes it fall off of its own.

This is how to do it:
Put a little bit of apple cider vinegar on a cotton wool pad and carefully rub it onto your skin tags. Repeat this a few times a day. If you add this to your daily routine, you’ll start to notice that the skin tag will change color; it will get darker. If, after a while, it has gone black, the tag will fall off quite quickly. The dark color means that the tag has dried out. Give it a try; it really does work!
